Just a few examples of the types of education issues we address include: the resources and funding schools need to reach student performance expectations; the costs of implementing the No Child Left Behind Act; the types of education practices that our nation's most successful schools use to raise at-risk student achievement; understanding the impacts of school choice; developing innovative ways to compensate teachers and to attract and retain teachers in hard to staff schools; and analyzing the efficiency of district and school resource use.
In January 2012, APA, Marzano Research Laboratory (MRL), and RMC Research Corporation received a contract from the U.S. Department of Education to form the Regional Educational Laboratory for the Central region (REL Central). REL Central will focus on building alliances with state- and district-level education leaders in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming to explore key policies surrounding educator effectiveness, closing the achievement gap, and postsecondary education and workforce readiness. APA Analyzes Denver Preschool Program Effectiveness
APA's research and analysis of the effectiveness of the Denver Preschool Program (DPP) has been published in a report analyzing the reading progress of DPP enrollees over time. APA has been the lead evaluator of DPP since its inception five years ago; this year marks the first time that a sizable number of DPP students participated in Colorado's standardized testing system (TCAP). APA conducted analyses of third grade reading results, comparing students who had participated in DPP with those that did not (who may or may not have participated in non-DPP preschool). The analysis found that 64% of DPP students scored proficient or advanced on the state reading test, compared with 58% of their peers who did not participate in DPP. Children who qualified for free and reduced lunch and participated in DPP were over 9% more likely to score proficient or advanced than their non-DPP peers.
